Announcement from David Flavell (Project Manager)
As one member of a small group of railway
preservationists, Barry Railway Coach 163 has been an integral part of my life
for over twenty five years. In my capacity as project manager one of the founder
members of the Barry Railway Coach Fund I started out with an optimistic outlook
of what might be achieved. Perhaps a somewhat naïve view on my par t, since the
task of restoring this vehicle has set me on a path of endeavor tinted at times
with frustration caused largely by lack of time, resources, material, labour and
cash, but punctuated by the shear pleasure of seeing coach 163 come back from
dereliction and certain destruction. I have been heartened by questions asked
‘how is the restoration carried out, what is the progress to date, how was it
made. I am indeed fortunate that I have been supported by friends and like
minded people in this arduous task for these many years, accompanied at every
stage of my labours by a dedicated band of companions and partners with a
similar dream to mine, which is seeing coach 163 in service as part of a
heritage train. Now, at the start of the second decade of the twenty-first
century, Barry Coach 163 is assured of a future primarily because of the
formation of the Barry Railway Carriage Trust (BRCT) an organisation dedicated
to preserving this coach and perhaps other similar vehicles that languish around
awaiting discovery and eventual restoration – with a growing membership and pool
of volunteers many of our objectives will undoubtedly will be achieved.
